Important Information about your Service Line

For 60 years, Mulberry-Fairplains Water has endeavored to provide safe and clean water for the residents of our community. Following the implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, we are required to maintain an inventory of all installed water lines up to your meter (known as “service lines”) that contain lead or galvanized steel. To comply with the new regulations, we must notify customers whose service lines are constructed with lead or unknown materials.

Mulberry-Fairplains Water keeps records of the water lines and meters we installed since our founding in 1965. However, we do not have information about every line in our system, especially those of older houses constructed before 1987. We must therefore confirm the materials of unknown service lines.  In the coming weeks, you may see a crew in your yard digging a small hole near your water meter. They will check your service line and then fill in the hole and repair your yard at no cost to you.

You do not need to do anything as a customer.

About Lead in Water

There is no safe level of lead in drinking water. Exposure to lead in drinking water can cause serious health effects in all age groups, especially pregnant people, infants (both formula-fed and breastfed), and young children. Some of the health effects to infants and children include decreases in IQ and attention span. Lead exposure can also result in new or worsened learning and behavior problems. The children of persons who are exposed to lead before or during pregnancy may be at increased risk of these harmful health effects. Adults have increased risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney or nervous system problems. Contact your health care provider for more information about your risks.

Mulberry-Fairplains Water does regular testing for lead and other contaminants in your water. Every year we submit a drinking water quality report that contains information about what is in your water, which is available to view on our website at https://mulfairwater.ruralwaterusa.com/water-quality-report. The most recent results show no lead in the water. Your water is safe to drink. However, if you are concerned about lead in your water, you may use a filter or flush your line by running the cold tap for 3-5 minutes.
